Meet Josh Bruce.
Working here is good. It’s small enough not to be too hectic but big enough to sustain work. I’m a freelance videographer, and I do all aspects of visual production from shooting to visual effects. It helps to be an all rounder when working in Newcastle because there are more jobs available. I’ve been doing freelance gigs since 2010, and I worked for an agency for a good chunk of time as well. I thought about joining a local coworking space, but I love the view from my apartment and also it’s quiet. I like making my own hours and being able to work with different clients and agencies for each job. It keeps things interesting. I’ve done work for Telstra and I’ve done work for councils and musicians; I’m not sure I would get that variety if I weren’t working for myself. One of the biggest struggles for me is timing. Right now I’ve got about four jobs on at once, and a few weeks ago I didn’t have any work. I’d love a more predictable schedule, but that’s just the nature of the beast. I get clients through word of mouth and approaching agencies, but I don’t really do social media promotion or anything. What would I post, a picture of my computer?
